What is a DOT SAP Evaluation?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) evaluation is a crucial step in ensuring the safety and well-being of employees in safety-sensitive jobs.

Steps in the DOT SAP Evaluation Process include:

• Initial Face-to-face evaluation

• Appropriate referral and successful completion of treatment and/or education (determined by SAP)

• Written reports that meet DOT guidelines sent to the employer’s designated employee representative (DER) to outline recommendations and completion of recommendations

• Follow-up clinical evaluation to evaluate employee compliance

• Follow-up testing plan

• Aftercare recommendations (as necessary)
